This is the life story of Vlado, born behind the Iron Curtain in Kurim, in the former Czechoslovakia. When he is 12 years old his parents decide to move to Vienna. What follows is the discovery of a whole new world, the world of movies. Soon young Vlado's passion for films results in his own short films. And from the beginning at the back of his mind, the desire to someday make a feature film .

Summary Tóngnián wangshì (1985)

The semi-autobiographical film on director Hou Hsiao-Hsien's childhood and adolescence, when he was growing up in Taiwan, living through the deaths of his father, mother and grandmother.

This depiction of childhood and adolescence draws heavily from the filmmaker's own boyhood. Like many of their compatriots, Hou's family moved from the mainland to Taiwan in 1948 and was unable ever to return. The film focuses on the widening generation gap in a family cut off from its cultural heritage.

Summary Banovic Strahinja (1981)

In late 14th century medieval Serbia becomes the target of Ottoman invaders. One of their renegade gangs burns the castle and takes young wife of Banovic Strahinja, respected Serbian noble. Banovic Strahinja begins long and almost futile quest for her wife despite everybody else's doubts in her fidelity.

The story takes place during the middle ages in Serbia. While estate owner Banovic Strahinja is out hunting, a Turkish bandit Alija attacks his castle. The Turks kill all of his servants and kidnap his beloved Andja. When he discovers what has happened, Strahinja gathers a posse of scoundrels and goes after the bandits. In the meantime, Alija tries to seduce Andja, but she refuses him. Nevertheless, with the passage of time she begins to weaken.
